MICHAEL PATERAKIS received his five year Diploma from the National Technical Univ. of Athens, Greece, his M.Sc. from the Univ. of Connecticut, USA, and his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Virginia, USA, in 1984, 1986, and 1988, respectively, all in Electrical Engineering. Since 1995, he is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (E.C.E.) at the Technical University of Crete (T.U.C.), Greece, where he is currently a Professor in the Telecommunications Division and since June 2013 Director of the Telecommunications Systems Institute (T.S.I.), a national research institute operating within the framework of T.U.C. During the period 2005 – 2010 he was the Vice Rector of T.U.C. responsible for Academic Affairs, Personnel and Communications/Computing Infrastructures. Between 2001 and 2005, he served as the Director of T.S.I. During Sept. 1999 – Aug. 2001, he served a two year term as the Chairman of the ECE Department. He was an Associate Professor in the Computer and Information Sciences Dept. at the Univ. of Delaware, USA, on the faculty of which he has been between 1988 and 1995.
His research interests include computer communication networks with emphasis on design, modelling and performance evaluation of broadband wireless and wire-line access networks, and distributed information systems. He has published extensively in the abovementioned technical areas. He has served on the Technical Program Committees of major international conferences (such as IEEE INFOCOM, VLDB), and as reviewer for many of the major IEEE Transactions and other international technical journals and conferences in his research areas. He advised five Ph.D.’s and nineteen research based M.Sc.’s. His Doctoral advisees hold (or held) senior research positions in major communications and software companies like Qualcomm, Verizon, Oracle, as well as tenure track faculty positions in the following Universities: Auburn, McMaster, Technical Univ. of Crete and Murdoch.
He has served as a guest editor of a special issue of the ACM Computing and Communications Review journal (2005), as general co-chair for the 14th IEEE LANMAN Workshop (2005) and for the IEEE WoWMoM Video Everywhere Workshops (2013, 2014 and 2015) and as invited speakers co-chair for the IFIP Networking Conference (2004).
Since 1996 he was the Principal Investigator (PI) of research and development projects in the USA and Greece, with a total PI share budget in excess of 2.7 million Euros. His team at TUC played a pivotal role in the design, development and overlooking of the construction of Broadband Fibre Optic-Based Metropolitan Area Networks in five municipalities of the Region of Crete (2005-2009), participated in the techno-economic preparation of the Greek national project: Open Access, Optical Fibre based Broadband Network to the Home (2011-2013) and is currently acting as Independent Auditor for the national project: Development of Broadband Infrastructure in Rural White Areas of the Greek territory and Operation Services – Development of Infrastructure (2015-2030).
